What Is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu means “finger pressure” It is a form of Japanese bodywork used to balance Ki (also known as Qi or Chi) in the body. The NYS Board of Professions requires all licensed massage therapists to be trained in this modality. Some LMT’s practice Shiatsu, others chose to use different modalities.

Oriental Health practices use a holistic approach. Shiatsu is a gentle complementary practice you can use to assist and maintain the balance of Ki. Balance is the key to health. Ki is the energy within us and around us. Our environment affects us. The people we share space with, the air we breathe, the food we ingest, the thoughts we have, all affect our energies. When a person shows symptoms such as a headache, insomnia, worry, muscle spasms, etc. it means their Ki is out of balance. To balance Ki a massage therapist can use Shiatsu to assist the flow, unblock it or move it to a calmer and more balanced flow. This is done by taking a history and doing a Hara evaluation. The therapist can then assist the flow of Ki through meridian work, point work and/or stretches. Let me point out here, massage therapists are not doctors of oriental medicine. That would take a lot more training and practice. If you need a medical treatment, you should see an M.D. or an O.M.D.

One of the tools used in Shiatsu is based on the 5 element theory. The elements are Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood.

There are two cycles shown is this picture. The outer circle is the creation cycle. Here Fire is the mother of Earth. Think about it, when fire erupts out of a volcano it creates earth. The inner arrows show the control cycle. Here Water controls Fire. Fire controls Metal. These relationships are taken into consideration when deciding which meridians to treat and how to approach the treatment.

Another tool used is the Hara evaluation. Here the Hara (abdomen) is palpated to access Kyo (emptiness, a need) or Jitsu (fullness, extension to fill a need). The therapists’ aim is to balance and assist a smooth flow of Ki.

Shiatsu is one of the holistic practices of massage therapy that is tailored to each individual client to balance their energy flow.
